A clear strategy

Think global, act local

A company that aims to become the number 1 in continental market for rail transport, has to think and act true European. That's the philosophy behind DB Schenker Rail – Europe's largest rail transport operator.

In comparison to road haulage, rail transport offers major advantages in terms of long-haul trips and the efficient combination of goods flows. Rail transport therefore opens the door to a unified Europe, where frontiers are fading fast.

New course

The rail freight sector requires a new strategy that will enable it to benefit from these new opportunities for growth. Europe’s railways originated as state-owned companies, characterised by their inflexible structures and national set-ups. Structures that do not offer the sort of framework required for the further development of rail cargo transport.

The solution: standardised processes and a standardised management approach in the various countries involved. This in combination with the continued regional responsibilities and identities of the divisions based in each of the countries forms the basis of DB Schenker Rail’s approach.

Further benefit from European liberalisation

DB Schenker Rail is open to new partnerships, whereby it is highly conscious of the necessity to integrate the different corporate cultures involved. The formula: position regionally – manage centrally – at home in Europe. By combining the various strengths of the partners, we aim to create added value for our international customers.

One of the other mainstays of DB Schenker Rail’s strategy is cooperation with other railway companies, on both a regional and an international basis. This applies to wagon-load transport in particular, as this type of transport benefits greatly from a system that operates at full capacity. Participation in the share capital of BLS Cargo is a prime example of this type of cooperation.
