Article: Infrastructure manager ProRail renews Kijfhoek • DB Cargo has taken measures to minimize impact

In brief:

  • From 24 June 2023 to the end of December 2024, Kijfhoek can only be used to a limited extent due to renovation work
  • DB Cargo has taken measures to limit impact to shippers
  • Operating times of terminals and sidings in the Netherlands will remain unchanged as much as possible

In the period from 24 June 2023 to the end of December 2024, extensive work will take place at the Kijfhoek sorting station. During this period, the capacity of the sorting station is reduced to half. DB Cargo has taken measures to minimize disruption to shippers. Operating times of terminals and sidings in the Netherlands will therefore remain unchanged as much as possible. This also applies to the operating frequency of terminals and sidings.

In anticipation of the start of work, DB Cargo has already implemented changes in its network. For example, a number of locations that are important for wagonload transport, such as Beverwijk, Moerdijk and Vlissingen, will be connected by direct trains to sorting stations in Germany. In consultation with ProRail, alternative locations in the Netherlands have also been set up for wagon load transport. The measures taken must minimize the impact for shippers in the Netherlands.

At the same time, there are no possibilities to temporarily park or buffer wagons at Kijfhoek during construction work. Customers who previously used the options to temporarily hold up wagons have already been informed about this measure. The capacity for the buffering of wagons will be reduced in the run-up to the start of the work. With that in mind, DB Cargo has recently introduced “Transport Permission Numbers” for wagons that will be handled at Kijfhoek. This allows DB Cargo to limit the time of the wagons at Kijfhoek and thus prevent congestion.
